That feeling...

Prescript
The feeling of indispensability of one’s life totally exposes the frailty of human existence. The inevitability of death quashes the indispensability romance.

It looks very human and normal to get to certain stage in life and have folks around us look up to us for one thing or the another, barring any irony or paradox, it is just the way life is designed-no man is an island they say. Our greatest undoing lies in the thinking of “we can’t be done without”-thinking that we don’t actually complete the puzzle because we are the puzzle ourselves-who are we to think that way?

Dearest Sir/Madam,  it might take time and time’s all we need. It might not be rosy but the hope that it’s going to bloom someday keeps us on our toes. That it might be bitter (without you) actually hinges on the sensitivity of our taste buds. Why feel your absence when your presence makes no difference in the first place-The true feeling of your absence gives the picture of how we felt when you are with us.

Reminds me of a story I read some pretty while back of a flute player who was good at what he does and loved by all and sundry, then the indispensability syndrome crept in, he felt the villagers  can’t do without him  ,prompting him to plan with his wife to fake his demise. As expected, the villagers mourned and wept for days but normalcy was restored as time took its toll-he was forgotten. A new flute player emerged who was better skilled than the former thereby hastening the extinction of Mr. A in the mind of the villagers. Mr.A could no longer take it prompting him to resurface so he might reclaim his spot, but he was told to go back to the land of the dead from whence he came!!!

Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can and as long as you ever can-That is true greatness –John Wesley

So the next time you find yourself in a position where your influence, affluence, wealth, skills and authority can count for others, do it with joy nay indispensability with the full understanding that we are humans and with various limitations.

  1. I like this! No one is indispensable or close to irreplaceable... the best thing to do when we still have it all is to let others in on it.

"Why feel your absence when your presence makes no difference in the first place?" That part did it really well for me.

    Nice one, chief.
